A. J. Smith

Born in Jonestown, MS, A. J. (Aj) Smith is a professor in the art department of the University of Arkansas, Little Rock. Smith holds an MFA in painting and printmaking from Queens College, City University of New York, and BFA in painting and printmaking from the Kansas City Art Institute, MO.   

Smith is a master printer in fine-art printmaking. He apprenticed for five years with Robert Blackburn, founding director of the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop, New York City. Smith extended his education, training, and practice with fellowships at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, ME; Tamarind Institute, Albuquerque, NM; Brandywine Workshop and Archives, Philadelphia; and Vermont Studio Center, Johnson. He was an invited artist at the 2008 GKK International Linocut Symposium at Galleria Klatovy-Klanova, Czech Republic.

Smith has exhibited extensively at national and international venues. He is included in Who's Who in American Art and his work has been featured in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Flash Art, and Artforum. He is represented in public and private collections throughout the United States, China, and Czech Republic, including the Library of Congress, Washington, DC; Arkansas Arts Center Foundation (now Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts), Little Rock; Columbia Museum; SC; and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
