Candida Alvarez

Candida Alvarez was born in Brooklyn, New York City. Her paintings have been exhibited at the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, MO, and were featured in Recollections: Works on Paper by Candida Alvarez & Vincent D. Smith at the Brooklyn Museum in 1979. She is a tenured professor of painting and drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she has taught since 1998.

Alvarez is known for her complex, vibrantly layered combinations of abstract and figurative forms that incorporate world news and personal memories. Many of her paintings employ silhouettes and bold colors. In addition to painting, Alvarez has worked in sculpture and created collages using diverse materials such as fabric, acrylic paint, enamel, and galkyd on surfaces ranging from canvas to cotton napkins to vellum.
