Nene Humphrey

Nene Humphrey is a New York-based sculptor and installation artist born in Portage, Wisconsin. She earned a BA from St. Mary’s College, Notre Dame, IN; an MA from Goddard College, Boston; and an MFA from York University, Toronto, Canada.

Humphrey has exhibited at McNay Art Museum, San Antonio, TX; Mead Art Museum, Amherst: Palmer Museum of Art, University Park, PA; High Museum of Art, Atlanta; and SculptureCenter and MOMA PS1 in Queens and Lesley Heller Gallery in Manhattan, New York City, among other museums and galleries.

She has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, Rockefeller Foundation, Brown Foundation, and Anonymous Was a Woman, among others. Her work has been written about in publications including The New York Times, Art in America, ARTnews, and Sculpture Magazine.

Since 2005, she has been an artist-in-residence at the Joseph LeDoux Lab at New York University's Center for Neural Science, where her work has focused on explorations of the brain mechanisms underlying human emotions. She was married to artist Benny Andrews until his death in 2006.
