Norie Sato

Norie Sato was born in Sendai, Japan, and lives and works in Seattle, WA. She earned a BFA from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and an MFA from the University of Washington, Seattle.

She works in sculpture, two-dimensional art, and in various media including glass, metal, terrazzo floors, integrated design work, landscape, video, and light. Sato’s practice includes work for galleries, museums, and other sites. She strives to add meaning and human touch to the built environment and considers edges as important as the center.

Her projects are located around the country, including at the San Diego (CA) International Airport Meditation Room; San Francisco International Airport ,Terminal 2; Arabian Library and McDowell Mountain Ranch Park & Aquatic Center, Scottsdale; Miami International Airport; Seattle Justice Center; Iowa State University Hach Chemistry Building; the Utah Transit Authority's Salt Lake City light rail system; Port of Portland Headquarters; University of Wisconsin, Madison; Chisholm Trail Parkway, Fort Worth, TX; and Seattle Waterfront's Union Street East-West Connector.

Sato received a Governor’s Arts & Heritage Award, Washington; Americans for the Arts' Public Art Network Leadership Award; Twining Humber Award for Lifetime Achievement from Artist Trust, Seattle, WA; honorary membership to the American Institute of Architects, Seattle Chapter, and grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. She is a former member of the Public Art Network Council and former commissioner of the Seattle Design Commission.
