Pedro Abascal

Artist and self-taught photographer Pedro Abascal was born in Havana, Cuba. In addition to being a visual-artist, he has worked as a photojournalist, commercial photographer, and photographer for film. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions in various countries and solo exhibitions in Cuba, Switzerland, and the United States.

Abascal's work is featured in public and private collections in Cuba, Mexico, France, Italy, and the Netherlands, as well as notable educational institutions, galleries, and museums in the United States. His images have been published in national and international anthologies of photography and visual arts including Canto a la Reality’s Anthology of Latin American Photography 1860-1993, Proyecto Memoria, Viva La Vida, and 100 Years of Cuban Photography. In 2003 he published "Personal Documents," a monographic essay exploring his documentary photographs.

Abascal is a recognized advocate of contemporary Cuban photography who goes beyond the limits of the anecdotal and descriptive by creating a high symbolic load with his work, achieving art of great beauty, expressive strength, and a distinctive personal style.
