Burt Hasen studied at the Art Students League of New York, New York City, and Académie de la Grande Chaumière, Paris. He was influenced by Abstract Expressionism, Surrealism, and Cubism.
In 1950, Hasen held his first solo exhibition at Galerie 8, Paris. Upon returning to New York City, he worked with artist Hans Hofmann. Hasen was an active member of the 10th Street Scene, which played a significant part in the growth and diversification of American art, and was a founding member of the March Gallery. He taught at the School of Visual Arts, New York City, from 1954 to 2000. In 1959 he received a Fulbright grant to study art in Rome.
Hasen's art is in public collections including the Smithsonian Institution and Library of Congress, Washington, DC; National Academy of Design, New York City; and the British Museum, London. Hasen was elected to the National Academy of Design in 1994 and was honored by the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2000.
