About the Work

From the Artist

The gnarled and weathered branches of a cherry tree, reach to the sky. Like a hand it holds the marks of winter as spring green life returns.

Thích Nhất Hạnh: "If you look deeply into the palm of your hand, you will see your parents and all generations of your ancestors. All of them are alive, in this moment. Each is present in your body. You are the continuation of each."

This print contains several generations of image making. One generation is the printed grain of a woodblock, the grain itself embodying many seasons of growth of a tree.  Another generation is the extensively scratched surface of an old work tabletop, bearing the scars of years of use. These, in turn, are recorded on several offset lithographic plates in three colors, which together form a branching image like a tree, an open hand upon which life and fortune may be read.
