About the Work

From the Artist

I have symbols in my work. The first, indeed, is the city as a container of joys, sorrows, longings of the human, the other is the pendulum, which is a symbol of time—and the other is the fruit of allegorical pleasure.

Except for minor exceptions, all the work of José Omar Torres transits between the figurative and the abstract, with a certain preference for primary colors. Figuration and abstraction that merge into the same canvas and that have been refined until reaching an essence where only some minimal references are needed to enter the city, the Island or time, whose abstract condition the painter captures, sometimes moving through the space of the canvas or paper the image of the pendulum that, like the inevitable sword of Damocles, swings for his work, for his life, for the existence of everything and everyone; and others, resorting to the constant flow of the sea from which the Island is born and its resistance against all winds and threats of all kinds.
