About the Work

Martha Zelt's print combines different colored geometric shapes into abstract compositions to investigate function and form. Zelt's practice is centered on material exploration, with dimensional and textured artworks created using materials such as handmade paper, fabric, cardboard, and other nontraditional printing materials. Untitled, 1980, a screenprint produced in an edition of 50 at the Dieu Donné papermill in New York, was made with hand-made paper and incorporated collage and stitching. Until a few years ago, Brandywine used Arches Cover White, a 100 percent rag paper, but switched to Somerset paper for a harder finish that did not flake as much as the Arches in the offset press.
