Painter, printmaker, photographer, and curator E. J. Montgomery was born in New York, New York. She studied with local craftsmen and worked for African American designer Thomas Usher. Montgomery received a BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts. Her work can be found in the collections, including those of the Paul Jones Collection of the University of Delaware, the Oakland Museum of California, Dianne Whitfield-Locke and Carnell Locke Collection at Hampton University, the Los Angeles Board of Education, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. Montgomery retired as a curator with the U.S. State Department’s Arts America Program in Washington, DC.
