Description

Houston: Contemporary Works on Paper is the inaugural exhibition in the new American Cites project of Brandywine Workshop. Each year, the fall exhibit in the Printed Image Gallery will highlight contemporary prints, drawings, mixed media, collages and photographs that represent the diversity and vibrancy of important art centers throughout the country. In developing a series of exhibits that focus on artists in divergent communities, Brandywine is continuing its efforts to provide organized and sustainable outreach in environments where our particular focus on printmaking and resources can make a difference in the lives of culturally diverse artists.

Houston, the fourth-largest city in the country, has an exceptional group of museums, which include: the Museum of Fine Art, the Contemporary Arts Museum, and the unique Car Museum, as well as, galleries at universities such as the new Texas Southern University Museum, University of Houston-Downtown, and the Rice University Gallery. The biannual Photofest at the Museum of Fine Art, Houston, draws international attention to contemporary photography. The Museum of Printing History showcases ancient and modern printing tools along with vintage all wood presses, a paper making shop, bookbindery and an active production facility for lithography headed by Charles Criner, on of the artists in the Brandywine exhibit.

The curator...is Eugene L. Foney, a longtime art dealer/publisher, whose firm Artcetera™ has been dedicated to Houston's African American artists, helping many of them to sell their art and gain national exposure. Without his passion and professional history, the confidence to assemble this exhibit would not have been sufficient for it to succeed. Eugene provided the credibility with artists and collectors, many of whom were not familiar with Brandywine, who agreed that the Workshop could borrow from their collections.
