Dr. David Herman, Jr. Assistant Professor, Department of Art Education and Community Arts Practices, Tyler School of Art, Temple University, earned a PhD in Art Education from the College of Visual Art and Design at the University of North Texas, an M.A. focused on Visual Sociology from the University of Texas at Dallas, and a B.A. in Media Communications from Florida A&M University.
He is a lens-based exhibiting artist, educator, and scholar whose work explores the relations between the perceptual and the social as a political endeavor. His research and scholarly interests are grounding in a belief that the social is inherently political and that arts education provides distinct and critical opportunities to engage and understand the affective nature of social life and the being with difference. Dr. Herman’s current work seeks to understand the perceptual experiences of preadolescents through a phenomenological framework he refers to as the Perceptual Rite of Passage (PRoP).
Dr. Herman has served as co-chair (20142016) of the Committee on Multiethnic Concerns, a special interest group of the National Art Education Association. He is currently the Editorial Assistant (2017–2020) for Art Education journal and executive board member (2018–2021) of the International Visual Sociology Association.
